千灯供養On the evenings of August 23 & 24 from 17:30 to 20:30, hundreds of lanterns will be lit around the roughly 8,000 stone monuments and statues in and around Adashino Nenbutsu Temple.
Long ago, this area was the site of a large graveyard - where corpses were often just dumped.
The ceremony is a prayer for the souls of the many dead.
It is peaceful and ethereal - but can be crowded.
If possible, get there early.
There is a fee of 1,000 yen.
