Cycling Kawai Kanjiro Kyoto Home and Museum

Kawai Kanjiro Museum KilnKawai Kanjiro Museum Kiln河合寛次郎記念館へ自転車で

Kawai Kanjiro was a potter, polymath, genius.

Although he is often lumped with the mingei (folk craft) movement that developed in the 1920s and 1930s in Japan, he is much more than that.

The mingei movement emphasized utility and anonymity. Kawai was interested in neither.

His works are madly creative and original - and instantly recognizable.

The house he resided and worked in, not far from Kiyomizu Temple, is now a museum that remains much as it was when he was alive.

It is a spacious two-story home with an inner garden. The massive kiln is in the back.

Throughout the house are works by Kawai, who was madly creative.

Kyoto University Museum Giorgio Vasari Exhibit

Kyoto University Museumジョルジョ・ヴァザーリのウフィツィ:建築とその表現

Giorgio Vasari (1511 - 1574) was a noted Italian painter, writer, historian, and architect.

Vasari today is best known for his biographies of Italian artists, and he is considered the founder of scholarly art history writing.

To celebrate the 500th anniversary of Vasari's birth, the Kyoto University Museum is displaying architectural models and other works related to the Uffizi Museum in Florence.

The exhibit also focuses on Vasari's work as an architect.

Vasari is not well known in Japan. This is wonderful opportunity for those not familiar with a titan of Italian art and architecture to learn. For those already versed in Vasari's work, this is a great chance to become reacquainted.

The exhibit runs through February 5th.

Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Masterpieces from the National Gallery of Art Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art

Kyoto Municipal Museumワシントン・ナショナル・ギャラリー展 印象派・ポスト印象派 奇跡のコレクション

Kyoto now has two, perhaps three, big-ticket exhibitions at the moment.

The Vermeer exhibit, which is almost impossible to get into - unless you enjoy waiting in line for an hour for a ticket, and then catching a glimpse of one of the master's works over the heads of a crowd of people in front of you - and the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Masterpieces from the National Gallery of Art are both on at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.

The National Gallery of Art, Washington, is currently undergoing renovations, making possible a once in a lifetime exhibit in Kyoto.

Masterpieces of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism are on display in spacious galleries. Beginning with works by Courbet and Corot and Manet, the exhibition consists of 83 works.

Among them are paintings by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne, Van Gogh and others.

Fabulous.

We are partial to Corot and Cezanne, but to see up close works by Mary Cassatt was thrilling.
