Kyoto Don't Park Here Bicycle Sticker

kyoto-stickerここに止めないで下さい!放置自転車だめだ!!

Kyoto has a new anti-parking sticker.

Crews of men roam the city and attach the stickers to bicycles parked illegally.

Those bikes are legion - way fewer than in the past thanks to the city's investing in bicycle parking infrastructure - so each worker carries a wad of the thin plastic stickers.

"Sticker" is not exactly right as they are not affixed but attached to bikes through a hole in the top which is visible in the image at right.

The "I don't read/speak Japanese" (or understand the cartoon) excuse is not valid: on the reverse is an English explanation.

It is clear and well written, and can be found below left.

Kyoto Bicycle Anti-Theft Sticker

towing sticker kyoto自転車にツーロック!

This colorful sticker was attached with a rubber band to a bike illegally parked along Kawabata Dori near Demachiyanagi Station in Kyoto.

In fact, each of the 30 or so bikes parked along a railing that separated the sidewalk from the Kamo River below was decorated with such stickers.

From right to left, the sticker reads "This bike is being targeted!"

Below that, a bicycle is in the crosshairs.

The left column states:

"Let's definitely lock up twice."

The police campaign is urging cyclists to use two locks. It is a bit strange, as this area sees a lot of foot traffic. The bikes are taking up precious space on the sidewalk.

The usual stickers - warning against parking here at all - have been absent for a while.

Bicycle Towing Warning Sticker Osaka

Osaka Bicycle Towing Tag自転車撤去ビラ大阪

The dreaded towing sticker.

Fear not illegally parked bike blocking the way for children, older people, and the handicapped.

This is just a formality, a warning.

The bike oji-sans - middle aged guys hired by the city - stick these labels on bicycles parked where they should not be. However, the bike is not likely to be towed anytime soon.

In Kyoto (this photo was taken in the Minami Horie area of Osaka), this would merely symbolize irritation on the part of officialdom. Actual towing takes place on pre-determined dates, and those dates are announced - with yet another type of flyer.

As long as an A4 poster with the date boldly noted is not found nearby, you are ok.

Please feel free to leave the bike for weeks, in the rain, taking up half of the sidewalk.
