Woman Hits Cyclist While Driving, Brags on Twitter, Apprehended

車で自転車をはねて逃げてからツイッターで威張って呟く

After hitting a cyclist while speeding in her car - and not stopping to help - a British woman was so pleased with herself that she tweeted about it.

Emma Way tweeted:

"Definitely knocked a cyclist off his bike earlier - I have right of way he doesn't even pay road tax. #bloodycyclists."

This went viral.

Unfortunately for Ms. Way, the police in Norwich, England, where the incident took place, also use Twitter.

She has been since been apprehended.

Cyclist Haruhisa Watanabe Dies in Accident in Russia

霧で交通氏渡辺さん遺体帰国

Alpinist, adventurer, and cyclist Haruhisa Watanabe was killed in foggy conditions while cycling in Russia in late December. His remains were repatriated in early January, and he was cremated in his hometown of Shizuoka, Japan.

By 2004, at just 22 years old, Watanabe had summited the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.

Beginning in June, 2012, he cycled across China, central Asia, and Turkey. In December, he was cycling in the largest city in the north pole when he was hit by a vehicle.

At just 31 years of age, Watanabe's premature death is a great loss among the cycling and alpinist community in Japan.

Hipster Cyclists Osaka

Hipster Cyclists Osaka大阪の自転車ヒップスター

Osaka has a vibrant, rough-edged cycling scene.

Like all Japanese cities, Osaka is easily traversed on two wheels and the bicycle is perceived primarily as a transportation tool.

Young people however are adding a bit of verve to that.

Funky, customized, tricked out bikes are common.

These two guys were out on a Sunday riding south of Osaka Station heading east.

San Francisco Cyclist

San Francisco Union Square自転車でサンフランシスコで活躍

On a recent stay in the Bay Area, we took in among other sites the cycling scene.

In spite of the city's famed hills, cyclists were everywhere.

From the Mission district's bike shops to Union Square's climbers, the city is very much sprinkled with two-wheelers.

Helmets tended toward construction site-like lids, panniers were omnipresent.

Parking, as in Philadelphia, was available on every block on old (?) parking meters.

The city is also home to many fantastic bike shops. Every shop we went to was staffed with very friendly women and men who are serious, serious professionals.

Cool Kyoto Cyclist

Cyclist Kawaramachi Oike京都での格好いい自転車男

This mildly hip young dude was spotted on Sunday at the corner of Kawaramachi and Oike, across the street from Kyoto's City Hall.

Hair pulled back, low boots, knobby tires - ready to take on the world.

All he needs is to customize his bike a bit more.
