Kyoto is well known for its flea markets.

Every 21st of the month Toji Temple hosts a big flea market on the grounds of the temple, which is south of Kyoto Station.

In north-central Kyoto, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine holds a flea market on the 25th of every month. This month that means tomorrow.

Tenjisan, as it is known locally, tends to have clothing, antiques, and food.

Go early, bargain hard, and enjoy.

Most of the good stuff will be sold and gone by 8 am or earlier.

Parking for cyclists is not a problem, but there will be a lot of people on foot.

Flea Market Toji Temple and Kita no Tenmangu Shrine 25th

Yesterday was the first "Kobo," or flea market that is held on the 21st of every month at Toji Temple in Kyoto.

Kyoto hosts many flea markets, two of which are well worth going to.

On the 21st of every month at Toji, you can find food, crafts, and antiques.

This Friday, on the 25th, in the north of the city at Kita no Tenmangu Shrine is another large flea market. Every 25th of the month, "Tenjin-san" - as the shrine is known - hosts an equally impressive flea market.

Here it is possible to find old kimono, lots of antiques, and more.

Go early: the good stuff gets sold first.

Bargain hard.

Cycling Kobo-san Flea Market Toji Temple Kyoto

初弘法

Toji Temple is a Buddhist temple in south Kyoto at the corner of Omiya and Kujo Streets - and features the pagoda visible from the bullet train as one pulls into Kyoto Station.

It was founded in 796 C.E. and is a World Heritage Site.

In addition, on the 21st of each month, it hosts a large flea market known as "Kobo-san," in honor of Kukai who founded the temple.

Kukai's full name was Kobo Daishi, and he died on the 21st of March. Thus, the flea market takes place on the 21st. Sellers set up stalls with antiques, food, pottery, crafts, art, clothes, etc.

The first flea market of 2012 was held on Saturday, and it was cold and rainy. In spite of that, 100,000 of the faithful showed up.

On a less rainy day, it is an easy ride from Kyoto Station or central Kyoto.

It is similar to but perhaps a bit more religious in feeling and offerings than the flea market at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. That flea market is held on the 25th of every month.

Taishogun Shrine Flea Market

大将軍神社の音楽家とフリーマーケット

The small shrine known as Taishogun in north central Kyoto holds periodic flea markets in its narrow complex.

It is close to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, which holds a much better known flea market held on the 25th of every month.

Kitano Tenmangu's Tenjin-san; Kobo-san, the flea market held on the 21st of every month at Toji Shrine; and Hyakumanben are the Big Three of Kyoto flea markets.

However, small markets flourish.

Taishogun is one example, and worth a visit.

On the first Sunday of every month, from 9 am - 4 pm, a low-key flea market takes place. Sellers spread out tarps and place their goods on top.

Recently, musicians have been hired to entertain. The accordian-playing woman was friendly and talented.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine Flea Market

Every 25th of the month, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine opens its proverbial gates and hosts a flea market.

It is an interesting mish mash of stalls selling food, fabrics, antiques, plants, etc. There are also some carnival games.

The good stuff gets pored over early, so if you are really interested in shopping for quality - go early.
