Bicycle Symbol Osaka Street

Bike Symbol Osaka大阪自転車車いす通路

On a pedestrian overpass near Osaka Station, we found this odd marker on the tiled pavement.

The marker was on the part of the overpass that stretches from the Hankyu Department Store's second floor to the Station, and then beyond to the opposite side of the wide street in front of the south exit of the Station.

We are not sure how a wheelchair would or could make use of the overpass: it has no elevators or escalators.

Bicycles would also be tricky. Crossing the overpass would entail carrying a bike up a long flight of stairs, pushing it across to the opposite side, and then carrying it back down.

Kyoto Takaragaike Sidewalk Bicycle Pedestrian Symbols

Bike Lane Takaragaike京都宝ケ池歩道にある自転車シンボル

On a ride near Kitayama, we peeled off to head up towards Takaragaike and its beautiful park.

En route, we noticed odd symbols on the sidewalk denoting "lanes" for pedestrians and cyclists.

We were riding in the street - hugging the left, keeping clear of car traffic - and only noticed the last set of symbols before the street climbed up a stretch known as "kitsune zaka" (fox slope).

The two bollards present an additional obstacle.

Buddhist Symbols Kumogahata Kyoto

Buddhist symbol Kyoto京都仏教の石碑

In the hills of northern Kyoto near a small town called Kumogahata, there are many pleasures to be had.

The area is a rural mountain enclave not far from downtown that is a step back in time.

Temples dot the area, and the several villages retain a Japanese look.

Near Itsukushima Shrine, we found this Buddhist marker and the foot of stone steps leading up to another temple.

The four characters are, clockwise from top: high, zen, cloud, temple.
