The delivery man makes his rounds in Kyoto on a souped up bicycle.

At least two of the major national delivery companies use bicycles in Kyoto: Sagawa and Yamato.

The city is compact, flat, and automobile parking is at a premium.

It is in short made for cycling.

On a near perfect late spring day, a Sagawa delivery man rode south from the Imperial Palace, down Teramachi, and then turned right onto an east-west street.

His tricycle is tricked out with a plexiglass rain cover, electric engine, and large carrying case.

Used Book Store Teramachi Kyoto

中古本屋寺町京都

Just north of Kyoto City Hall on Teramachi Dori stretches one of the city's most interesting shopping areas.

South of Oike, Termachi is arcaded and also filled with quite a few quirky stores.

However, our preference is for the several blocks north from Oike to the Imperial Palace.

Among the shops is a small used book shop packed to the ceiling with old books, prints, and a map or too.

The owner was in the back, seated and deep into his newspaper.

Murakami Sweets Teramachi Kyoto

村上開新堂京都

Founded in 1904, Murakami is a cookie and sweets institution in Kyoto.

The shop is located on Teramachi north of Nijo Dori, which is between City Hall and the Imperial Palace.

It is the oldest western style pastry maker in Kyoto.

The shop has a pre-War vibe and is a real step back in time. The floor is made of tiles, and the cookies are kept in old-time glass jars.

Murakami is a known for its "Russian Cookies." Many of the cookies bring to mind the buttery cookies grandmom made: melt in your mouth delicious and topped with raisins, chocolate, and other items.

Much of Teramachi is lined with interesting shops: used book shops, restaurants, bamboo goods, a wonderful liquor store, the city's pellet shop (for heating), clothing shops.

Kyoto Green Tea Ippodo

一保堂京都

Ippodo is mecca for Japanese tea lovers.

Though some fans of tea grown in Shizuoka, near Mt. Fuji, will no doubt object, the center of the Japanese green tea universe is on Teramachi, south of the Imperial Palace and near City Hall.

Ippodo was founded in 1717, when Ihei Watanabe created the now legendary tea shop.

The store sells many types of tea and tea utensils.

It is also possible - and highly recommended - to sit and drink tea in the Kaboku Tea Room.

Access

From Oike Dori, walk north on Teramachi (the small street next on the west side of City Hall) for 6-7 minutes. From the southeast corner of the Imperial Palace, Teramachi Marutamachi, walk south on Teramachi. On the east side in a large traditional building with noren curtains.
