Cycling Book Review The Road Back

road-back書評「The Road Back」

The Road Back is a delicate, inspiring read.

Michael Vitez, a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer, writes the story of Matt Miller, a student at the University of Virginia and triathlete.

One day, while cycling the Blue Ridge Parkway, Miller fell into an oncoming Porsche. Every bone in his face was broken.

This is not the end but the beginning of the story.

The story was a three-part piece in the Inquirer. It documentes both Miller's tremendous drive and the people who helped him heal.

"My mission as a writer has always been to celebrate life, to lift the human spirit when I can. I tried to do that with this book," said Pulitzer prize winner Vitez.

Cynic that we are, we approached this book warily.

It was heartwarming and wonderful.

Yokozuna Bicycle Parking Lot Tokyo

Yokozuna Bicycle Lot横綱駐輪所

Hard by the JR Sobu/Chuo Line tracks is the Yokozuna Bicycle Lot.

You know you are in sumo land.

Thanks to the statue of two wrestlers in front of the station, the main sumo hall adjacent to the station, and all the touristy stuff on sale nearby, there is no mistaking what the area of Ryogoku is famous for.

For those who want to cycle to the area - which includes the wonderful Edo-Tokyo Museum - the Yokozuna Bicycle Lot awaits. For 24 hours, the fee is 100 yen. The lot is open 24 hours a day.

A Yokozuna is of course a Grand Champion, the wrestler who sits at the pinnacle of the sumo world. Today the Mongolian Hakuho (pictured below on the right) is one of two Yokozuna.

Fellow Mongolian Harumafuji was recently promoted as the second Yokozona, following his defeat of Hakuho.

Cycling from Kiyomizu Temple Kodaiji Temple Chionin

Kamigamo Shrine自転車で清水寺から知恩院へ

This week's cycling route takes us over to the Higashiyama eastern hills of the city.

Kiyomizu ranks with the Golden Pavilion at the top of must see sites.

The World Heritage Site was established in 798 C.E.. The main hall, supported by massive pillars, juts out over the edge of the hills

Nearby are the narrow, beautiful slopes called Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka.

They are filled with quaint shops in Japanese style buildings.

To the north is Nene no Michi. Nene no Michi (The Path of Nene) is one of the most beautiful street in Kyoto.

On the north side of Nene no Michi is Kodaiji Temple, which was established in 1605 by Nene, the wife of the late Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

From there it is on to Maruyama Park and Chionin Temple. The former is a park that abuts Gion, the latter was founded by Honen in 1294.

A great, great ride and day.

Bike Shop Harajuku自転車ビアンキ新店表参道ヒルズ

The Italian bicycle brand Bianchi opened a branch in the chic Omotesando Hills shopping complex in Tokyo.

This is not your neighborhood bike shop with an old guy up to his elbows in grease.

As befitting a 125 year old company - an Italian company - the shop is sleek and clean and chic.

It is one part museum, one part boutique.

Located in the basement, we are not sure how you would get your bike down there for repairs, but the young cool guys in the shop were working on bikes.

Bicycle Book Review Wheels of Change: How Women Rode the Bicycle to Freedom

wheels書評「Wheels of Change: How Women Rode the Bicycle to Freedom 」

Wheels of Change takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of the history of women and bicycles. For example, the relationship between bikes and women's liberation is examined: the simple bike gave women mobility. It sounds prosaic now, but at the time it was revolutionary.

Wheels has vintage photographs, advertisements, cartoons, and songs that give the reader a strong sense of the era(s) and the bicycle's role therein.

As Susan B. Anthony noted, the bicycle "has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world."

In Wheels, Sue Macy has contributed to the literature of the bicycle.

Cycling Kyoto Kitayama to Kamigamo Shrine

Kamigamo Shrine自転車で北山から上賀茂神社へ

This week's cycling route is yet another Kitayama route.

Kitayama is a lovely area in north Kyoto and is north of downtown Kyoto.

A short bike ride north of Kitayama Subway Station, on the Kurasuma line, is Ota Shrine. This is a tiny Shinto shrine nestled against a mountain side. It is best known for its irises, which bloom in May.

From Ota Shrine, it is less than five minutes on bike to one of the city's most beautiful streets. Priests and others affiliated to Kamigamo Shrine live in large compounds behind walls that are separated from the road by a canal.

Just down the street from here is Kamigamo Shrine. Built in 678 C.E., it is a World Heritage Site and one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. It has an expansive green lawn that is used in an annual Yabusame event - archery on horseback - during the Aoi Festival.

Back near Kitayama Station, is the elegant tree-lined boulevard Kitayama Dori. Next to the subway exit is the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. There is a small entrance fee. The land was given to the city by the Mitsui family in the 1913, and is spacious and beautiful.

Ride, Kamigamo, ride.

Bicycle Book Review The Paleo Diet for Athletes: The Ancient Nutritional Formula for Peak Athletic Performance

paleo書評「The Paleo Diet for Athletes: The Ancient Nutritional Formula for Peak Athletic Performance」

For those cyclists who want to take their performance to the next level, this is book is for you.

"The Paleo Diet for Athletes: The Ancient Nutritional Formula for Peak Athletic Performance" is nutritional strategy for improved "athletic performance, weight loss and peak health based on the Stone Age diet humans were designed to eat."

Sound tasty?

For those new to this school of cuisine, it is high protein, low on processed-food to improve health and exercise.

Professor at Colorado State in the department of health and exercise science, Dr. Cordain has spent years researching the "evolutionary and anthropological basis for diet, health and well being in modern humans."

Paleo is easy to read and comes with specific examples of what to eat.

Bon appetit! Or, as we say in Japan, itadakimasu!

Kyoto Imperial Palace Hamaguri Gate Bullet Holes

Bullet Marks in Hamaguri Gate京都御所蛤御門の変

On August 20, 1864, a pitched battle took place in central Kyoto just outside the Imperial Palace. Participants were armed with swords and rifles.

The battle, which occurred at the Hamaguri Gate on the west side of the Palace, was fought between pro-imperial and anti-alien (foreigner) groups.

The rebels who attacked the Palace fought under the slogan Sonno Joi - "Order to Expel the Barbarians" - that had been promulgated by the Emperor in March 1863.

The rebels wished to wrest control from the Emperor himself to accomplish the restoration of the Imperial throne.

Forces from Choshu attacked the Palace, which was defended by the Aizu and Kuwana Domains, near the Hamaguri Gate, one of the Nine Forbidden Gates.

More than 100 Choshu soldiers died in a losing effort. Before fleeing, though, Choshu forces set fire to the city. The resulting conflagration burned most of Kyoto south of the Imperial Palace. As a result, in a great swath of Kyoto, there are almost no buildings that were built prior to 1864.

Following this, the military government - the Shogunate - went south to retaliate and routed the Choshu.

Imperial Palace Hamaguri GateTo this day, the bullet holes remain in the gate, which faces Karasuma Dori, north of Marutamachi.

Book Review Straphanger: Saving Our Cities and Ourselves from the Automobile

strap書評「Straphanger: Saving Our Cities and Ourselves from the Automobile」

Taras Grescoe is aggressively, passionately pro-public transportation. And he is also American.

Having grown up riding the 23 trolley to school in Philadelphia, we are the target audience for this book and know whereof Grescoe writes.

Public transportation was not cool or hip back then in the 1970s and 1980s; it was how those without a car got from place A to place B.

Thanks in part to global warming, the image of public transportation has shifted - a bit.

Still, to many suburbanites trains and buses and subways in the US are the last resort of the lower class: dirty, dangerous, and never punctual.

Thanks to US government policy, sprawl, and businesses that favor the automobile - and suburban living - there is some truth to this.

The same people who scorn riding pubic transport in the US are only to happy to gush about how convenient the London Tube or Paris Metro or Tokyo subway is.

In Straphanger, Grescoe is fighting back, angry and full of factoids. (Among our favorites was this: nine out of ten commuters in America drive to work, 75% of them alone.)

He travels and uses the New York, Moscow, Paris, Copenhagen, Tokyo, Bogota, Phoenix, Portland, Vancouver, and Philadelphia public transportation systems.

Moreover, he examines how we can "undo the damage that car-centric planning has done to our cities and create convenient, affordable, and sustainable urban transportation—and better city living—for all."

For those of us commuting by bike in Kyoto, we can only say Amen.

Bicycle License Plates in Tokyo?

Bicycle Towing Sign Ueno Tokyo自転車にナンバープレート都検討

At some point in the not so distant future, cyclists in Tokyo may be required to have a license plate - for their bicycle(s).

Tokyo city council is now contemplating requiring all adult cyclists register and have a license affixed to their bicycle.

The rationale is that it would reduce accidents by preventing hit-and-run incidents. Moreover, it would make it easier to find owners of bicycles abandoned or stolen in the streets of the capital.

In 2009, Tokyo towed 734,000 bicycles. That is more than 10 times the number towed in Kyoto.

The current proposal would involve a deposit for the license. Those funds would be managed by the city.

Kyoto Damage In the Event of Massive Earthquake

南海トラフ自身の被害想定

The Japanese government recently revised its estimates for damage in the event of a 9.1 earthquake that occurs in the Nankai Trough and resulting tsunami.

The Nankai Trough faces Shizuoka, Aichi, Wakayama Prefectures, and then heads south along the eastern edge of Shikoku and Kyushu.

The worst hit areas are coastal: Shizuoka (109,000 dead, 319,000 homes destroyed) and Mie Prefectures (43,000 dead, 239,000 homes destroyed).

The total number of fatalities is estimated to reach 320,000 across the country.

Kyoto, which is inland, gets off lightly. If/when such an earthquake strikes, Kyoto would face deaths of around 500 and 70,000 homes destroyed - but no flooding.

In this horrific scenario, cycling may take on added importance.

自転車で京都堀川通りの横へ

Horikawa自転車で京都堀川通りの横へ

日本語ご希望の方

This Kyoto cycling route is short, sweet and, if you look down, scenic.

Horikawa, a large north-south boulevard in Kyoto, has had a canal running parallel to it for hundreds of years.

By the 1950s, the river/canal had become a bubbling polluted slow-moving body of water. The culprit(s) was dyeing. Workers from nearby Nishijin, the center of Kyoto's weaving industry, used to use the river to rinse dyes from cloth in the river.

The river has been cleaned up and planted.

For cyclists though the real attraction is the road that runs above and to the east of it (to the left in the photo), which is smooth sailing from Imadegawa all the way down to Oike. Few cars use this road.

Ride Horikawa Kyoto ride.
