Cycling the Silver Pavilion Kyoto

Ginkakuji Temple, Kyoto自転車で銀閣寺へ

Ginkakuji Temple, or the Silver Pavilion, represents a particular Kyoto sense of beauty and elegance, often referred to as wabi sabi.

It is a Zen temple in the eastern hills of Kyoto, at the northern end of Philosophers Walk. Work was begun in 1460 C.E.

Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is no silver in the pavilion (unlike the Golden Pavilion, which is coated in gold leaf and is on the other side of Kyoto).

The exterior of the building was originally intended to be covered in silver, but this never came to be. However, the name stuck.

Kimono Beauties Kyoto Silver Pavilion

CIMG9811京女銀閣寺

On a winter visit to the Silver Pavilion (Ginkakuji Temple), we found these three young women bedecked in fine kimonos.

The day was overcast and biting cold.

The ride along Imadegawa Dori past the Imperial Palace and Kyoto University was bracing (read: frigid).

It was well worth it.

Our umpteenth visit to the World Heritage site was rewarding. The time of year, the sense of time stopping, never disappoints.

The zen temple at the northern end of Philosophers Walk is wabi sabi refined elegance at its best. It was built in 1460 C.E.

It is today affiliated with the Shokoku-ji branch of Rinzai Zen and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Silver Pavilion (Ginkakuji) by Bicycle

Ginkakuji Temple, Kyoto自転車で銀閣寺へ

Ginkakuji Temple is perhaps the zenith of Japanese artistic expression. The fifteenth-century temple was originally built as a villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, a hopelessly incompetent but artistically inclined ruler in a time of horrific conflict and instability.

Located at the end of the Philosopher's Walk, Ginkakuji is a World Heritage site.

As originally envisioned, the temple was designed to be painted silver, However, because of the disruptions of the Onin War this never happened. of construction never took place.

The grounds are fabulously beautiful.
