Global shift away from Cars Would Save Trillions, Eliminate 1,700 Megatons of Carbon Dioxide Pollution

車離れで二酸化炭素削減、生命救う

According to Science Daily, "More than $100 trillion in cumulative public and private spending, and 1,700 megatons of annual carbon dioxide -- a 40 percent reduction of urban passenger transport emissions -- could be eliminated by 2050 if the world expands public transportation, walking and cycling in cities, according to a new report."

In place of fossil-burning cars, a combination of an increase in public transportation, walking, and cycling in cities would reduce emissions, result in 1.4 million fewer early deaths, and save money.

Cycling along the Kamo River to the Katsura River

自転車で鴨川から桂川

Want to cycle from Kyoto to Nara? Osaka? Or just down to the Katsura River?

If you live in central or eastern Kyoto, it is a long ride across town to get to the legendary bike path that stretches 40+ km from Arashiyama all the way to Kizu (close to Nara) or Osaka Castle.

It is possible to do the ride from downtown Kyoto along the Kamo River.

Cycling along the Kamo River from as far north as Kitayama or, on the Takano River from Shugakuin, all the way to where the river joins the Katsura River can be done.

Except for one tiny stretch, that means no cars from Kitayama to Osaka Castle, Shugakuin to Nara, central Kyoto to Arashiyama.

For information, follow the map on this page.

Bicycle Commuting Makes You Better at Work

自転車通勤京都市

According to Bicycle Magazine, cycling to work may make you more productive.

"Researchers at the University of East Anglia and the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR) studied 18 years of data on nearly 18,000 British commuters ages 18-65 to arrive at the conclusion, which takes into account factors like income, children, and job and relationship changes.

In addition to the obvious physical benefits, active commuters felt less stressed and reported that they could concentrate better on work if they commuted by walking or cycling. Cyclists and walkers also showed improvement with regard to other psychological markers, such as feelings of worthlessness, unhappiness, and sleepless nights fueled by nightmares of highway gridlock."

And thus we commute in Kyoto, every day, to a bike lot near Demachiyanagi train station. From there it is a 50-minute train ride to work in Osaka (which probably negates the positive effects of the ride!).

Cycling Lake Biwa (again)

Bike Path Lake Biwa Japan自転車で琵琶湖一周

In October we are doing the Lake Biwa circuit. This will be the second time, and this time we will ride clockwise around Japan's largest lake.

That means Otsu to Makino, where we hope to spend a night. From there, we head into Oku Biwa (Upper Biwa), then down into Nagahama and back around to Otsu.

Three friends will join me for the Lake Biwa circuit.

Two of us live in Kyoto, so will meet at Heian Shrine, say a quick prayer to the Cycling Gods - and then head up and over Sanjo into Otsu.

The other riders live in Tokyo and Shiga. They will join us in Otsu.

Already, in early September, the weather Gods are shining, and a nip is in the air.

Mother Biwa awaits.

Record Rain in Japan, Cycling in Kyoto

8月の多雨日射不足「記録的」

August witnessed record rainfall and little sunlight in Japan.

In Japan as a whole and here in Kyoto, it was a wet month.

As a result of two large typhoons (#11 and #12) and other storms, there was flooding, a major landslide, and much crop destruction. And on the bike, the month was a drag.

In Kyoto, rainfall measured 487 mm, which is 3.7 times the normal average rainfall.

Good riddance summer and welcome to Kyoto's storied fall weather.

Yamauta 2014 Festival

山水人2014年

One of Japan's main peace, renewable resources, vegetarian, campout, live music, hippie confabs will take place in the mountains of Shiga Prefecture, which is just across from Kyoto, from August 23 until September 7.

The 10th annual Yamauta festival features live music, workshops, and lots of family fun.

The three kanji that make up the title mean "mountain," "water," "person."

Admission is not free. A pass for the entire two weeks is 6,000 yen (4800 if bought online in advance). A day pass is 3,000 yen.

The easy non-environmental way to get there is drive in your own car. For those not driving, access from Kyoto Station is:

1. Take the JR Kosei line from Kyoto Station JR Adogawa Station (about 30 minutes).

2. Change to the Ewaka bus Kutsuki Line and get off at "Kutsuki Shisho Mae - Bus stop"

3. Take the Takashima community bus from there to "Oisugi bus stop."

4. It is about 15 minutes on foot from there.

For the ironmen and women out there, it is 45 km on a bike from the Imperial Palace in Kyoto.  We have done the ride to Ohara, which takes about 45 minutes, but have not gone beyond that point.

It would be hard riding on mountain roads, but we may be up for it this year.

In addition there will be lighting in the Horikawa Canal, which is farther west.

The illumination will be lit every night between 7 and 9:30 pm.

For those going on bike, parking is available on Oike.

More Tanabata events can be found here.

Hiking Mount Atago on July 31 at Night

Mount Atago Kyoto愛宕山千日参り

The night of July 31 is magic in Kyoto.

On that night, thousands of hikers climb Mount Atago - at night.

At 924 meters, it is the highest mountain in the city.

The festival that takes place that night is known as "Sennichi Tsuyasai," which roughly translates as one thousand days all night festival.

The purpose of the festival is to pray to the gods on the mountain for a thousand days of flame (for cooking, heating, life) and, on the contrary, a thousand days of fire prevention.

The hike is about 4 kilometers from top to bottom, though a bit shorter if you start from the opposite side of the mountain.

What makes this event special is that most of the climbers do so after dark. The city strings up lights from the bottom of the mountain, in Kiyotaki, all the way to the very top at Atago Shrine.

As hikers ascend the mountain, they call out "O kudariyasu" (on your way down) to those descending. In reply, they say "O noboriyasu" (on your way up).

At the very top are many lanterns (see bottom left).

Once at the top, pilgrims buy good luck charms to ward off fire and bad luck.

What to Bring

Light clothes, plus something heavier for when you get to the top (the temperature can be quite chilly)
A change of clothes
Water
Light snacks
Small towel for sweat
Bit of cash just in case
Sneakers or light hiking boots
Flashlight

Bus to Kiyotaki

Rainy Season Almost Over in Kyoto

Kyoto Bicycle Chic梅雨明け京都

Rainy season is almost officially over.

The six-week season of cool nights and mornings and muggy days is now in its final throes.

The sound of the cicadas is the main clue. They are singing their high summer song, and it is hot.

That means High Summer is upon us.

In Kyoto, late July until mid-September equals torrid daytime temperatures.

Cycling is brutal this time of year.

We tend to do only local runs - shopping, going out at night - until early autumn.

From that point on, when Kyoto weather is sweet and forgiving, we head into the hills on the bike.

Kyoto Yoiyama Festival Images 2013

Kyoto Yoiyama 2013宵山2013年のイメージ

We will be out and about at Kyoto's annual Yoiyama festival. Downtown basically closes for three nights in the leadup to the July 17 Gion Festival.

Here is a taste of some of the images from last year.

The "hoko" floats are out on display, and thousands and thousands of Kyotoites will be out in their yukata robes.

It is a wonderful, special night.

Typhoon Hits Kyoto, Cycling Tough

台風8号、鹿児島に上陸 九州横断し四国付近へ印刷用画面を開く

A massive once in ten year typhoon is barreling up Honshu Island and headed towards Kyoto.

Typhoon 8 made landfall in Kagoshima just before 7 am today.

It is raining now in Kyoto, and heavy rains are predicted for this afternoon and tonight.

Hopefully, the skies will be blue and bright for tomorrow's commute to Demachiyanagi.

Cycling Ohara Kyoto

Ohara Farm House自転車で大原へ

Ohara is a lovely country village in the hills north of Kyoto.

It also has a gorgeous temple, Sanzenin Temple, that is well worth visiting.

From the Kitayama area of Kyoto, head up Route 367 all the way to Ohara. It is a relatively easy incline, and will take about 45 minutes from Kitayam to Ohara, if that.

Also in Ohara are Raigoin Temple, and Otonashi no Taki ("no sound waterfall").

Raigoin is about five minutes on foot up a slope from Sanzenin. It is quieter and less visited than the more famous temple below, and was founded in the middle of the ninth century.

For those with time, a 15-minute ride to the other side of the valley lies Jakkoin Temple. It was severely damaged in 2000 in a horrific act of arson but has been rebuilt.

The area is also along the Kyoto loop hiking trail that begins in Fushimi Inari and ends at Kokedera Temple.
