Winter Cycling in Kyoto Japan

Snow cycling Kyoto京都冬のサイクリング

With temperatures at record highs in Australia and record lows across much of the United States, we are reminded that winter cycling in Kyoto is not bad at all.

Indeed, except for the worst month and change of high summer - mid-July to the beginning of September when you should avoid going out in the middle of the day - one can cycle fairly comfortably year-round.

At the coldest point in winter - which we are fast approaching - long johns ("heat tech" here at Uniqlo), a good pair of gloves, and a scarf should be enough during the early morning ride to work or the train station.

Low temperatures in Kyoto in late January and early February hover just below freezing. Anything below -3 or -4 (25 degrees Fahrenheit) is unusual.

Snow moreover on city streets is also unusual. In the fifteen years we have lived in Kyoto, there have been three serious snowstorms. For each, it snowed about 10 cm (3-4 inches), was lovely to look at, and the roads more or less free of said snow by mid-afternoon.

In a bit of a bonus, though, snow can often be seen for weeks if not months at a time in Kyoto. Because of the location of the city - built in a bowl, surrounded on three sides by mountains - there is often a dusting of snow on Mt. Hiei, Mt. Atago, and the hills north of the city towards Kumogahata.

Thus, while riding, you can enjoy the beauty of snow without having to ride in it.

Winter Weather Hits Kyoto

12日も冬型の気圧配置が続く。北部は断続的に雨が降り、午後は雷を伴う所もある見込み。南部も雲が多く、にわか雨がある。

Winter has arrived in Kyoto.

While actual snow fell in northern Honshu and Hokkaido, Kyoto has yet to experience that this year.

Still the city got hit by a cold front that drove temperatures down to 5 degrees (41 Fahrenheit) with highs only expected to hit 10 degrees (50 F) today.

That means early December weather and - after a warm October - a sudden burst of fall color.

Time to pull out the tights for the ride to Demachiyanagi on our commute.

Snowy Winter Cycling Hokkaido

Bicycle Parking in Hokkaido真冬の自転車サイクリング北海道

And we complain about the cold in Kyoto.

In a suburb of Sapporo, bikes are lined up in a parking lot in front of a JR train station.

A quick glance at the snow made it clear that the bikes were not dumped; the owners were hardy commuters who had arrived that day, parked, and taken the train.

Presumably, they will then ride home tonight.

Bracing.

Cycling Sapporo Japan

Bicycle Symbol冬の札幌を自転車で楽しむ

Ah, winter in Sapporo!

Cold does not begin to describe it.

However, with central heating (unlike Honshu) and an outdoor culture, people on the big north island keep on keeping on, no matter what the weather.

On packed snow, many were out cycling in Sapporo.

On one patch of sidewalk on which the snow had melted was a nearly illegible bike symbol reads that pedestrians have the right of way.

This is quaint.

Pedestrians do not have the right of way on any sidewalk in any part of Japan.

Old people and young, the handicapped and athletes, are terrorized by cyclists, who often have no choice but to ride on sidewalks - legally - since the nation's bicycle infrastructure is minimal.

Japan has a great bicycle culture; its cycling culture however lags.

Another reason for a frozen beer.

Winter Cycling in Kyoto

kyoto-winter京冬自転車

En route to the Keihan Railways Demachiyanagi Station yesterday, we paused along a bridge crossing the Kamo River to enjoy the snow covered mountains in the north.

It was ball-numbingly cold on the ride from western Kyoto but Santa's early arrival saved the day.

The new "lobster" gloves were toasty, even without putting on the usual liners we wear with ordinary gloves on the 30-minute commute. A bit bulky - and shifting will take some getting used to - but the fingertips were warm and happy.

Moreover, thanks to a new pair of high-tech socks from Pearl Izumi, the toes were equally warm.

A true Christmas miracle.

The mountains in the distance are heading up towards Kumogahata, which was no doubt covered in snow. More central parts of Kyoto rarely see accumulation or ice on the roads, so cycling all winter is doable.

Winter Has Arrived in Kyoto

Kamo River Mountains京都冬自転車

On the ride to work this morning - from Ninnaji Temple to Demachiyanagi, where we catch the train to Osaka - there was a light dusting of snow on the roads.

It was nothing to be nervous about - but the extremities were very, very cold on the ride.

The photo is dated, but this is roughly what Kyoto looked like this morning: white powder on the mountains in the distance.

As we do every year, we are now seriously considering buying the lobster mitt type gloves.

Cold in Kyoto

New Year 2011 Kyoto京都の真冬の寒さ

Winter 2012 has been cold, very cold.

However, except for flurries, it has yet to snow in metropolitan Kyoto (the photo was taken on New Year's Day 2011).

Just beyond the mountains that ring the city of Kyoto is another world however.

In Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, on Friday, 84 cm (33 inches) had accumulated.

Until Sunday, daily temperatures were rising only to about 3-5 degrees C (35 F) in toasty urban Kyoto.

There is now a slight let up in the weather, but another cold front from Siberia is on its way.

At this time of year, every year, we regret not having purchased the lobster claw type bicycle gloves. At least, though, the streets are clean and dry - even after a bit of rain over night - and we commute as always on the bike to the train station.
