Cycling Kyoto Station to Kiyomizu Temple to the Silver Pavilion

Ginkakuji Temple, Kyoto自転車で京都駅>清水寺>銀閣寺

Here is a fairly flat route that takes in some of the big name temples in eastern Kyoto.

From Kyoto Station, you can ride in one day to Kiyomizu Temple, Nanzenji Temple, Eikando Temple, Honen-in Temple, Kurodani Temple, and Ginkakuji Temple (pictured at right).

Also, a good portion goes along the Kamo River, one of the great "bike lanes" in the world.

Note: you will want to park and then walk up to Kiyomizu Temple. Ditto for Philosophers Walk. Both are very crowded with pedestrians.

Cycling Kiyomizu Temple Kyoto 自転車で清水寺へ

kodaiji templeCycling Kyoto Kodaiji Temple

日本語ご希望の方。

In the Higashiyama area of Kyoto is some of the best touring to be found in the city. There are hills, small and very doable, but the views and sites gorgeous.

Down the road from Kiyomizu Temple, down the sloped Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka - beautiful old style roads - is Nene no Michi.

Nene no Michi (The Path of Nene) is drop dead gorgeous.

On the north side of Nene no Michi is Kodaiji Temple, which was established in 1605 by Nene, the wife of the late Toyotomi Hideyosh. The temple is also stunning.

On fall days, this area is very crowded.

We recommend parking nearby and walking.

Cycling from Kiyomizu Temple Kodaiji Temple Chionin

Kamigamo Shrine自転車で清水寺から知恩院へ

This week's cycling route takes us over to the Higashiyama eastern hills of the city.

Kiyomizu ranks with the Golden Pavilion at the top of must see sites.

The World Heritage Site was established in 798 C.E.. The main hall, supported by massive pillars, juts out over the edge of the hills

Nearby are the narrow, beautiful slopes called Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka.

They are filled with quaint shops in Japanese style buildings.

To the north is Nene no Michi. Nene no Michi (The Path of Nene) is one of the most beautiful street in Kyoto.

On the north side of Nene no Michi is Kodaiji Temple, which was established in 1605 by Nene, the wife of the late Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

From there it is on to Maruyama Park and Chionin Temple. The former is a park that abuts Gion, the latter was founded by Honen in 1294.

A great, great ride and day.

Ride, Kiyomizu, ride.

Kiyomizu Temple by Bicycle

Kiyomizu dera Temple自転車で清水寺へ

Kiyomizu Temple is among the top sites to see in Kyoto. It is a World Heritage site that was founded in 798 C.E.

The hugely popular Kiyomizu Temple (Kiyomizu-dera, in Japanese) is a dramatic complex whose main hall is built out onto pillars. The effect is that of a deck reaching out from the foot of the mountain.

Kiyomizu-dera is made up of several Buddhist temples and has spacious grounds. The temple is named for a waterfall on the grounds ("kiyoi mizu" means pure water).

It is also close to The Path of Nene and the small beautiful streets Sannenzaka and Ninnenzaka.

From the center of Kyoto, it will take you about 20 minutes to ride to Kiyomizu Temple.

Access
