自転車で高台寺とねねの道へ

kodaiji templeCycling Kyoto Kodaiji Temple

日本語ご希望の方。

In the Higashiyama area of Kyoto is some of the best touring to be found in the city. There are hills, small and very doable, but the views and sites gorgeous.

Down the road from Kiyomizu Temple, down the sloped Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka - beautiful old style roads - is Nene no Michi.

Nene no Michi (The Path of Nene) is drop dead gorgeous.

On the north side of Nene no Michi is Kodaiji Temple, which was established in 1605 by Nene, the wife of the late Toyotomi Hideyosh. The temple is also stunning.

On fall days, this area is very crowded.

We recommend parking nearby and walking.

Ride Kodaiji ride.

Bicycling Kodaiji Temple

kodaiji temple自転車で高台寺へ

Kodaiji Temple is one of Kyoto's gems.

It was established in 1606 by Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The temple was built in memory of Hideyoshi.

Kodaiji sits atop a bluff above the Path of Nene, a lovely street named for the aforementioned Nene, and overlooking central Kyoto.

The whole area is rich in history and perhaps the best preserved section of Kyoto.

A wonderful day would be to ride from central Kyoto, park your bike, and then head first up to Kiyomizu Temple. From there, wander down Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka towards Nene no Michi.

From there it is easy to stroll Ishibei no Koji, the postcard pretty alley that connects to the Path of Nene.

Due south is Gion, due east is Yasaka Shrine and Chionin Temple.

Details

Kodaiji Temple
9:00 to 17:30 (entry until 17:00)
Admission: 600 yen (Kodaiji and Sho Museum)
900 yen (Kodaiji, Sho Museum and Entokuin; 1000 yen from mid December to late March)

Cycling to Kodaiji Temple

kodaiji temple自転車で高台寺へ

Kodaiji Temple is part of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism and located atop a bluff in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto

It was founded in 1606 by Nene, the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The temple itself is a short walk up from Nene no Michi (The Path of Nene), a fabulous street in east Kyoto.

It has quite a few objects listed as Important Cultural Assets. The Main Gate and the Spirit Hall, which are noted for their use of maki-e, are two examples.

Kodaiji Temple also affords a view of central Kyoto.

Ishibei Koji Alley Kyoto

Ishibei Koji Kyoto石塀小路京都

Ishibei-koji is a postcard perfect alley near Kodaiji Temple and the Path of Nene in the Higashiyama Area of Kyoto.

It snakes from the Path of Nene west through a neighborhood filled with ryotei (high end restaurants) and ryokan (traditional inns).

The alley is paved with elegant stones and is perhaps the only area of Kyoto where you can point and shoot in any direction and still go home with a beautiful image. No framing necessary here.

Ishibei-Koji connects Shimogawara-Dori and Kodaiji-Dori, and is often used as a location for period movies and television dramas set in Kyoto. It is easy to miss, but the lantern below denotes the entrance.

Until May 8th, the area near and around Kodaiji Temple (600 yen to enter the interior) is being lit up. It presents a mysterious and ethereal nightscape.

Thanks to the strong dip in number of visitors to Kyoto, we had the streets and grounds of Kodaiji almost to ourselves.
