Cycling From Kyoto Station to Tofukuji Temple

Tofukuji Temple自転車で京都駅~東寺~東福寺へ

日本語ご希望の方。

A cold front has moved into Kyoto and western Japan. This makes cycling early in the morning and late a night a bit chilly.

However, midday is glorious.

For those who have just arrived, a great ride in Kyoto is from Kyoto Station to Toji Temple and then on to Tofukuji Temple.

Toji Temple is a short ride south of the mega-station building. From there it is about 15 minutes through industrial south Kyoto to some of the most beautiful fall colors you will ever see.

Cycling Kyoto Station to Mibu Temple

自転車で京都駅から壬生寺

For those wanting to take a short ride from the Kyoto Station area, several routes can be recommended.

The most obvious - and shortest - is down to Toji Temple.

Going the other way is Mibu Temple.

Along the way are old temples, an aquarium, the Ryugoku Buddhist Museum, and several good public baths.

It is a short and easy wander.

Kyoto Station Kotochika Shopping Center Opens Today

京の玄関、最大コトチカ 9店舗、3月1日全面開業

Attention shoppers: Kotochika Kyoto opens today.

Kotochika is a bit of nirvana within Kyoto Station. In the newly renovated part of the underground shopping mall in the station near the subway Karasuma Line, the new Kotochika store is 630 square meters of heaven close to the north exit.

"Chika" alludes to "chikatetsu," or subway. There is a Shijo Kotochika at the Shijo Station within which are eight stores. At Karashume Station is a smaller version with two stores

Kyoto Station's Kotochika is the largest to date.

We try to avoid the Kyoto Station area when on bike, but there is ample parking in the area.

Cycling Kyoto Station Toji Temple Tofukuji Temple

Tofukuji Temple自転車で京都駅~東寺~東福寺へ

日本語ご希望の方。

This Kyoto cycling moves from Kyoto Station south to Toji Temple (below) and then on to Tofukuji Temple (at right).

It takes in two fabulous temples, and wends its way through Japan's oldest slum, south Kyoto. (Not to worry, it is not dangerous at all.)

For more information, here is a page on cycling to Toji and Tofukuji.

Bicycle Parking Kyoto Station

Kyoto Station Bicycle Parking京都駅駐輪

The area around Kyoto Station is still a bit nerve-wracking place to cycle. However, it has become a wee bit better in recent years.

There are better connections between the north and south sides of the station for cyclists. It is massive, so getting around it was possible but you had to know the one or two streets that had sidewalks.

In addition, bicycle parking lots have sprung up on the south side of the Station, which alleviates the fear of being towed.

Stretching for quite a distance, the lot on the Hachijo Guchi side of the Station is now fitted with the lot pictured here.

The lot is covered - so bikes stay dry - and costs the standard 150 yen/day.

Kyoto Station

Kyoto Station Roof京都駅

Kyoto's massive gateway station building looms large on the cityscape.

Hiroshi Hara's Kyoto Station building opened in 1997 to celebrate the 1,200th anniversary of the foundation of Kyoto (Heian) as the capital of Japan.

The 15-story, glass-plated gray space station has been justly criticized as being inappropriate for the fabric of the city. It looms menacingly over a once elegant city.

Kyoto Station boasts a sixty meter tall atrium and is 470 meters from east to west. The total floor space of the building is 238,000 square meters, which includes a department store, the Granvia Hotel, a theater, exhibition space, as well as many shops and restaurants.

It is possible to walk to either Higashi Honganji or Nishi Honganji from the station.

Bicycle Underpass Kyoto Station

Bike Underpass Kyoto Station自転車専用地下道京都駅

Getting around Kyoto Station - the massive main station and gateway to the city - on a bike used to be daunting.

The station is so large that you had to ride around it, finding a street that went under the many train tracks both above and on ground.

Now, it is not nearly as difficult to get from the north to south - or vice versa of the Station thanks to several bike paths.

The one pictured here is due south of Kawaramachi Dori, at the western end of the Station.

It is bikes only, and a quick shot from one end to the other of the station.

There is also a route on the eastern end of the Station, just beyond the main post office.
