Only in Kyoto: Bicycle Parking News

大学悩ます放置自転車

Only in Kyoto. Or perhaps Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Munich, Tokyo, and perhaps Davis, California. The key factors are: 1. robust cycling culture, 2. large number of universities in an urban area, and 3. thousands of abandoned bikes.

In a recent article in the Asahi Shinbun, Japan's paper of record, the problem of graduating students leaving their old bike in bike lots run by the university they recently left is causing a massive headache for many of Kyoto's universities.

The end of March is graduation season in Japan, and in urban Japan many of those leaving the city where they studied abandon the beater of a bike they used for four (or more) years.

In Kyoto, which is home to 30-plus universities and is densely populated, the problem of this huge pile of old bikes is serious.

Doshisha University, one of Japan's leading private universities, has been scrambling to create bike lots close to its Imadegawa main campus. The full-lot crisis is so severe that students unable to find a place to park are arriving late for class. (Great excuse!)

To combat this, many schools are implementing a registration system for bicycles, bike sharing on campus, and/or charging for parking spaces.

Parking facilities for bikes not near universities remain for the most part user-friendly and easy to find and use.

One Mile of a Protected Bike Lane is 100x Less Expensive than One Mile of Roadway

自転車の専用レーンの1マイル分コストは普通道路の100分の一

Here is some food for thought on public transportation financing and options.

According to Treehugger:

One of the most hilarious (or, hilariously illogical) attacks on expanding bicycle infrastructure that I've seen repeatedly pop up over the years is the idea that "bicycle infrastructure costs too much." It only takes a few moments to reflect and put such costs into perspective.

For one, bikes are clearly much smaller and lighter than cars or trucks. So, the space needed to accommodate bicyclists is obviously much smaller, and the repairs needed from deterioration are also smaller. Furthermore, as you attract more people to bicycling, that pulls people out of their cars, reducing the deterioration and eventual repair costs of the car lanes. Naturally, the benefits improve even further when we think about bridges.

Looking at San Francisco, in particular, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition recently published an article on the cost of a mile of bike lane in San Francisco versus a mile of other forms of transportation. The difference was stark, but PeopleForBikes made the starkness much more evident by creating a chart of those numbers.

Read on by clicking here.

Murder Machines: Why Cars Will Kill 30,000 Americans This Year

「殺人機械:車」

We are not anti-automobile.

However, the true cost of an automobile, its true cost to society, has yet to be passed onto the consumer.

From pollution, to road-building, to injury and death, society picks up the tab for much of car-related mayhem. Automobile taxes do not come close to covering this cost.

An thought-provoking article caught our eye. If you want to kill someone in the United States, you can get away with it in a car - as long as you are sober.

Read on:

There’s an open secret in America: If you want to kill someone, do it with a car. As long as you’re sober, chances are you’ll never be charged with any crime, much less manslaughter. Over the past hundred years, as automobiles have been woven into the fabric of our daily lives, our legal system has undermined public safety, and we’ve been collectively trained to think of these deaths as unavoidable “accidents” or acts of God. Today, despite the efforts of major public-health agencies and grassroots safety campaigns, few are aware that car crashes are the number one cause of death for Americans under 35. But it wasn’t always this way.

Kyoto Umekoji Park Cycling and Trains

Umekoji Park京都梅小路公園を自転車へ

Kyoto's Umekoji (Plum Small Alley) Park is fast becoming a go-to area in what was once a railroad yard.

The park is about one kilometer northwest of Kyoto Station, and is now home to the city's aquarium and the Steam Locomotive Museum and a large green space in the center of the city.

It is 12.5 hectares (30 acres) and opened in 1995. Prior to that, the area was a village that was folded into various larger municipalities, and then became a railroad yard.

In the Edo Period (1603 to 1868), it was part of Yamashiro Kuni. In 1868, it joined the newly created Kyoto Prefecture, and was known as Kadonogun, Umekojimura. In 1889, the official name of the area became: Kyoto Prefecture, Shichijomura, Umekojimura. In 1918, the area was incorporated into Kyoto City.

In 1876, the Umekoji Train Station opened along the Saiin Line, which to this day still heads west out of Kyoto Station. In 1913, Japan Railways purchased the land that now is the park, and in the following year built a railyard for steam engines and freight trains.

Today, what remains is the Steam Locomotive Museum. It is housed in an attractive wooden station building that was built in the early part of the 20th century. In a previous incarnation, it was the station building for JR Nijo Station between 1904 and 1997.

This March 8 two more train-related facilities opened. The Chin Chin Densha (street car or trolley, which is the sound of the bell it used to make) is the featured form of transport. Fans will be able to take a short ride on an old street car. In addition, there is Kyoto City Trolley Store - the last stop of the ride - where you can buy local goods (hours: 10 - 6 pm).

Spring Arrives in Kyoto?

Cycling near Demachiyamagi snow on hills up north京都に春がきたのか?

After a blast of arctic air that finally lifted on Wednesday, spring-like weather appears to have arrived in Kyoto.

Monday morning saw snow in the hills and mountains that surround Kyoto, and it was cold on the bike.

We had on the lobster mitts and the funky hat with ear flaps that fits under a bike helmet.

Hopefully, the heavy duty winter gloves and underwear will be packed away until December.

Bicycling to opportunity...in safety

自転車で安全で機会へ

Our new hero is Anthony Foxx, the current United States Secretary of Transportation.

The former mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, won plaudits for introducing light rail into the southern city.

At the recent 2014 National Bike Summit, Foxx spoke of safety issues and increasing bike lanes - as he did while as mayor in an area of the country not known for its bicycle advocacy or use.

Music to our ears.
