Cycling along the Kamo River to the Katsura River

自転車で鴨川から桂川

Want to cycle from Kyoto to Nara? Osaka? Or just down to the Katsura River?

If you live in central or eastern Kyoto, it is a long ride across town to get to the legendary bike path that stretches 40+ km from Arashiyama all the way to Kizu (close to Nara) or Osaka Castle.

It is possible to do the ride from downtown Kyoto along the Kamo River.

Cycling along the Kamo River from as far north as Kitayama or, on the Takano River from Shugakuin, all the way to where the river joins the Katsura River can be done.

Except for one tiny stretch, that means no cars from Kitayama to Osaka Castle, Shugakuin to Nara, central Kyoto to Arashiyama.

For information, follow the map on this page.

Bicycle Commuting Makes You Better at Work

自転車通勤京都市

According to Bicycle Magazine, cycling to work may make you more productive.

"Researchers at the University of East Anglia and the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR) studied 18 years of data on nearly 18,000 British commuters ages 18-65 to arrive at the conclusion, which takes into account factors like income, children, and job and relationship changes.

In addition to the obvious physical benefits, active commuters felt less stressed and reported that they could concentrate better on work if they commuted by walking or cycling. Cyclists and walkers also showed improvement with regard to other psychological markers, such as feelings of worthlessness, unhappiness, and sleepless nights fueled by nightmares of highway gridlock."

And thus we commute in Kyoto, every day, to a bike lot near Demachiyanagi train station. From there it is a 50-minute train ride to work in Osaka (which probably negates the positive effects of the ride!).

Cycling Lake Biwa (again)

Bike Path Lake Biwa Japan自転車で琵琶湖一周

In October we are doing the Lake Biwa circuit. This will be the second time, and this time we will ride clockwise around Japan's largest lake.

That means Otsu to Makino, where we hope to spend a night. From there, we head into Oku Biwa (Upper Biwa), then down into Nagahama and back around to Otsu.

Three friends will join me for the Lake Biwa circuit.

Two of us live in Kyoto, so will meet at Heian Shrine, say a quick prayer to the Cycling Gods - and then head up and over Sanjo into Otsu.

The other riders live in Tokyo and Shiga. They will join us in Otsu.

Already, in early September, the weather Gods are shining, and a nip is in the air.

Mother Biwa awaits.

Record Rain in Japan, Cycling in Kyoto

8月の多雨日射不足「記録的」

August witnessed record rainfall and little sunlight in Japan.

In Japan as a whole and here in Kyoto, it was a wet month.

As a result of two large typhoons (#11 and #12) and other storms, there was flooding, a major landslide, and much crop destruction. And on the bike, the month was a drag.

In Kyoto, rainfall measured 487 mm, which is 3.7 times the normal average rainfall.

Good riddance summer and welcome to Kyoto's storied fall weather.
