Kamo River Dining

Kawadoko Deck Kyoto京都鴨川の川床

It is that divine time of year when Kyotoites dine under the stars by the river.

Every May the restaurants along the Kamo River in central Kyoto erect decks that abut the rear of buildings and face the river.

This allows for more business - tables and chairs are set up on the decks - and a wonderful night of cold beer, cool breezes, and a great view of the mountains in the distance or the city up close, as one tucks into a delightful meal.

At many places reservations are required. However, at non-traditional restaurants - Thai, for example - or those towards the northern or southern ends of the stretch of establishments, you can usually just walk in.

Kyoto is one of the only - the only? - in which outdoor dining is part of the local culture.

The decks will be up until early September.

Visiting Kyoto Ninja House on Bike

ninja-house自転車で京都二条陣屋へ

Kyoto's famed Ninja House is open to visitors after several years of renovations.

The private home is known as Nijo Jinya that has been owned by the same family, the Ogawas, for several hundred years.

The 17,600 square foot house has 24 rooms. To protect the powerful guests who stayed in the inn, security measures were intense.

The building has the following security measures:

1) hiding places between cupboards
2) low ceilings to limit swordplay
3) design features that allowed the secret and constant monitoring of visitors
4) removable floor tile
5) sliding panels that could pivot thus allowing a guard to "disappear"
6) a trap door in a that could drop an attacker into a hidden pit filled with a row of poisoned spikes.

Visitors need a reservation and the tours are conducted in Japanese only.

Thus, an interpreter may be required (i.e., you must supply your own).

Time table

Tours start at 10 am, 11 am, 2  pm, and 4 pm

Each tour lasts 50 minutes and is conducted in Japanese.

Entrance fee

Adult 1,000
High school student 800

Reservation

Tel: 075-841-0972
Reception hours
10:00~18:00

It is a short ride or walk from Nijo Castle.

Rainy Season Kyoto Hyrdrangea

Hydrangea in Kamishichiken梅雨いりの京都上七件の紫陽花

Rainy Season has begun on most of Japan's main island Honshu.

For cyclists in Kyoto, that means a mix of weather: from cool mornings and even blue skies, to downpours and high humidity.

The commute on Monday was cool - literally a breeze - but by late morning it was sticky and muggy.

Back on the positive side, rainy season also brings with it a riot of hydrangea.

This plant is at the western end of Kamishichiken, a geisha district that is adjacent to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.

We prefer this species to the more bulbous mophead type of flower.

Rainy Season 2014 Cycling in Kyoto

梅雨京都自転車サイクリング

Rainy season finally arrived - and with a bang.

The winds are howling and a storm is barreling up from Kyushu.

In Kyoto, heavy rains are expected for tonight and through to Saturday.

May was hot and the farmers, as they always do, suffered.

Now it is a cool 25 degrees - and wet wet wet.

That however did not stop us or anyone else this morning. The roads were thronged with commuters on bikes.

Enjoy your commute.
