Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art 80th Anniversary Takeuchi Seiho Exhibit

革新の栖鳳、鮮烈　京都市美術館開館８０年展、２２日開幕

To celebrate its 80th anniversary, the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art will be holding an exhibit of works by Takeuchi Seiho.

Takeuchi was painted in the nihonga genre, and lived from 1864 until 1942.

The exhibit runs from October 22 - December 1.

Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art 400 Years of European Masterpieces from the State Hermitage Museum

京都市美術館大エルミタージュ美術館展 世紀の顔･西欧絵画の400年

The Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art is putting on a big ticket exhibit this fall.

89 masterpieces from collection of works in the Hermitage Museum will be in Okazaki this fall.

The works include pieces by Titian, Rubens, and Rembrandt; Monet, Cézanne, Picasso and Matisse.

One of Matisse's masterpieces, The Red Room (Harmony in Red), will be back in Kyoto for the first time in 30 years.

The exhibition spans four centuries of work, featuring paintings from the 16th through 20th Centuries.

Get ready to stand in line.

For cyclists, the museum is a short flat ride from central Kyoto.

Kyoto Municipal Museum and Heian Torii

平安神宮鳥居と京都市立美術館

After passing by the gates of the Kyoto Zoo, we rode along the canal that separates the street and the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.

In the distance is the largest torii gate in Japan.

Spanning the road that runs between the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art and, across the street, the Museum of Modern Art is the Heian Shrine Torii gate.

It was built in 1929, it is 24.2 meters high (79 feet); the top rail is 33.9 meters (111 feet) long.

This is in the Okazaki area of Kyoto, which is filled with museums and temples.

It is a 10-15 minute ride from downtown Kyoto.

Cycling to Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art

自転車で京都市美術館へ

One of Kyoto's great attractions is the city's Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.

It is a big old musty brick pile built in the 1930s that once a year or so gets one of the big ticket exhibits.

Located in Okazaki, it is close to the zoo, Heian Shrine, the Museum of Modern Art, and only a short ride from Philosopher's Walk or Chionin Temple.

The area has wide streets and is just 10 minutes from downtown.
