Down a side street that angles northwest from the entrance of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is an old liquor shop.
Vending machines man the front of the shop, a telephone pole frames the east end of the store.
With its Honda Cub scooter parked in front, it could be Any Old Liquor Shop in Kyoto.
Most neighborhoods have one such shop, usually run by a very old man or woman.
When a customer enters the shop, the owner will emerge from behind a curtain that separates the living area and the shop. A television is likely to be blaring behind the curtain.
Bottles of sake are stacked high on shelves. Candies and other snacks are on smaller shelves at the register.
